ACPACI CELEBRATES 2010 ACCOUNTANCY WEEK

True to its commitment, the Association joined the Philippine Institute of Certified Public Accountants, Association of CPAs in Public Practice, Association of CPAs in Education and the CPAs in Government in the nationwide celebration of the 2011 Accountancy Week on July 19-24, 2010 at the Hotel Intercontinental Manila.

On July 20, 2010, the Association sponsored the second day celebration with the holding of the 2nd Controllers and Accountants’ Summit. It was participated in by more than 150 CPAs from the commerce and industry sector.

The whole-day event kicked-off with a technical session on strategic planning. It was handled by Ms. June Cheryl A. Cabal, PLDT’s FVP-Controller, who shared her expertise on the subject matter. Although her talk focused on the Role of Controllers and Accountants in Strategic Planning, she also shared how PLDT’s Controllership Division strategically positioned itself to gain the respect of other divisions and departments within the firm. She emphasized the key areas that are critical to the strategic planning process of the Company and that Controllership is not just a back end job. "It can be a responsive controllership if it can bridge the gap, point-out issues and be where the action is", she stressed.

The general membership meeting that followed the first technical session was addressed by Senator Teofisto Guingona III. As a new senator, he discussed his advocacies and his moves on how to position himself as a legislator. In his talk, he challenged the CPAs to actively and passionately play their role as guardians of the financial systems.

During the luncheon meeting, ACPACI President, Atty. Betty Salvador, also presented her President’s Report.

Another technical session was held after the general membership meeting. It was handled by the Presiding Justice of the Court of Tax Appeals, Justice Ernesto Acosta, who explained the rights, steps and procedures on how to handle and better manage tax assessments.

A session on wellness ensued after Justice Acosta’s talk. With the CPAs being stressful at times, the association welcomed the presence of Dr. Edwin A. Bien, a wellness specialist, who highlighted the importance of having a healthy lifestyle and wellness.

Open forum followed after each session, giving the members an opportunity to ask questions and to thresh out issues about the topics discussed.
